The Friendship Society was set up in 1995 with the aim to bring together all those interested in promoting friendship between Watford and Veliky Novgorod.
Watford
The first recorded mention of Watford was in the will of Ethelgifu (wife of Edmund, a Saxon King, grandson
of Alfred the Great) in 946. Before that time, Watford was part of the Manor of Cashio, which is mentioned
in the Doomsday Book. Watford has a population of about 81,000.
Veliky Novgorod
The full name Veliky Novgorod means "Lord Novgorod the Great". With a population of around 200,000 people, Veliky Novgorod is the largest of Watford's twin towns. Veliky Novgorod lies in Russia, part of the Commonwealth of Independent States approx 120 miles south of St. Petersburg and is to be distinguished from Nizhniy Novgorod (Gorky) which is located on the Volga, to the east of Moscow. The twinning was established in 1984 and has resulted in many exchanges and visits.
